How Do Counterbalance Valves Work?

When you deploy it as a load control or holding mechanism in a hydraulic cylinder system, the check valve enables unobstructed fluid flow into the cylinder during load elevation.

Once you shift the directional control valve to neutral, the load-generated pressure forces the check valve to seal. If this pressure stays below the preset relief threshold, the load remains stationary until you re-activate the control valve to initiate descent.

During lowering, pressure from the load and the opposing side of the cylinder simultaneously acts on the pilot port, surpassing the relief setting. When you return the control valve to neutral, pilot pressure dissipates, causing the relief valve to reseal and lock the load securely.

Moreover, you’ll notably observe that the valve’s modulation depends on an inverse pilot ratio, balancing load pressure and pilot pressure. For lighter loads, higher pilot pressure is required to open the valve, while heavier loads demand lower pilot pressure. So, at their core, counterbalance valves operate by regulating pressure and flow to manage the movement of hydraulic fluid.

In a simple way, counterbalance valves are pre-set to maintain a certain pressure level that counteracts the load’s weight. So, when the load moves, the valve adjusts the flow of hydraulic fluid to maintain stability which gives you control.
